Machu Picchu in Peru
Imagine an ancient city so well hidden high in the mountains that no one found it for a very long time! This city is called Machu Picchu and it's located in a country called Peru, very far from here.
Here are the most important things you should know about Machu Picchu:
Who Built the City?
A very long time ago, over 500 years ago, the Inca people built this city. The Inca were a very special and clever people. They could fit huge stones together so precisely that even today, we don't understand how they did it without machines!

-
Why Is It So Special?
-
Hidden and Mysterious: Machu Picchu is located on a high mountain between two other mountains. That's why it was so hard to find, and it remains incredibly mysterious even today.
-
No Mortar: The Inca laid the stones so perfectly that they didn't even need mortar to build the walls. It's like a giant puzzle made of stones!

-
What Was Its Purpose?
-
No one knows exactly why Machu Picchu was built. Some believe it was a place for important Inca kings or priests to worship the sun. Others think it was a safe place to hide from enemies.
-
Llama Parking Lot: Today, many llamas live at Machu Picchu! These are funny animals that look a bit like camels with long necks. They roam freely and are great for photos.
-
Fairytale View: When you're at Machu Picchu, you see a breathtaking landscape. The clouds sometimes pass directly through the city, and it looks as if the city is floating.

-
What Is there to see?
In Machu Picchu, there are many houses, temples, and terraces. The terraces are like large steps on the mountain slopes where the Inca grew plants. There's also a Sun Temple where the Inca worshipped the sun.

-
Why Was It Abandoned?
When the Spanish came to Peru, they conquered the Inca Empire. But they never found Machu Picchu! Nevertheless, the city was eventually abandoned. Perhaps the people got sick or didn't have enough food anymore. That, too, is a mystery!

So, in short:
Today, Machu Picchu is a very important place and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This means it's so important that it must be protected forever, so many people can visit this amazing ancient city. Imagine walking through these old walls and thinking about how the Inca lived here. It's like a time travel into a distant, exciting world!
